Take It and Run Thursday: Gimme Food!

Take_it_and_run_thursday_2 Welcome to Take It and Run Thursday!

It's our way to bring together the knowledge of all of us ordinary runners.  It's the virtual equivalent to putting our virtual heads together.  Even though many of us aren't elite athletes, coaches or authors, it doesn't mean that we haven't earned a well deserved PhD in running.   Whether you are starting out, have 50 years of running under your belt or somewhere in between - all of us have lessons learned that make us wiser and better runners.

Today's theme is .... Gimme Food!  It's summer and many runners are increasing mileage which can also increase appetite.  What are your favorite recipes for your pre run fuel or post run recovery or just everyday meals?  It would be great to have a few new ideas on our family menu board of what to plan for and serve that not only agrees with my running but dishes that taste great.   If you aren't much of a cook, no worries - just contribute your favorite food(s) or nutrition tips.

Next weeks theme is - Overcoming the Tough Stuff.   However you define "tough", we all have parts of it in our running.  For some it is hills, humidity, heat, hell wind.  For others it is the middle of a long run or even others speedwork.   Tell the Lounge about the "tough" stuff in your running and how you overcome it.

Running and Food, Glorious Food

It’s nice to be posting about food without a guilt complex.

The topic of this week’s Take It and Run Thursday is food and there are no ground rules.  Unless you don’t have any interest in foods—favorites, dislikes, recipes—then you belong here!

Performancenutrition_150_2 I’ve learned a lot from Matt Fitzgerald’s Performance Nutrition for Runners.  In it he talks about the Six Pillars of Performance Nutrition and breaks it down and explains how the right nutrition is as much a competitive advantage for improvement as running the right workouts.  Includes great info on maximizing Runnerscookbookcover_4 energy sources, shaping your body composition, supplements, fueling, recovery, and tips to lose weight without dieting.

I just ordered a book but can’t tell you much about it. It’s
The Runners’ Cook Book:  Recipes From Some of the World’s Best Athletes.  It’s a compilation of recipes and is a fund raiser to benefit the Jenny Crain "Make It Happen" Fund and the Ryan Shay Memorial Fund.

Tom’s Food Stuff

Favorite Unusual Food: stuffed grape leaves

Favorite food website:  Cooking Light

Foods I love and can’t eat enough of: sweet potatoes

Food you won’t believe I love: Fruitcake

Foods I love, but don’t eat: soft drinks, hot dogs, donuts

My Sin Foods: ice cream, onion rings, M&Ms, animal crackers, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (character shapes)

My steps to Leanness

  • It’s all about what foods you keep around the house
  • When trying to eat healthy, pretty soon the good stuff starts to taste good and I can walk away from the bad stuff.
  • Size does matter: it’s all about portion size—and we won’t learn anything about healthy portion size in an American restaurant.

Looking forward to reading everyone's preferences, recommendations, and words of wisdom about foods.

Take It and Run Thursday: Overtraining

Take_it_and_run_thursday_2 Welcome to Take It and Run Thursday!

Today's theme is .... OverTraining! Just Say No!  It is the early season for the first glimpse of overtraining.  Many runners are settling into running plans for late summer or fall races and for some the first clues to overtraining are starting to surface.  I can remember a year ago reading through blogs in mid July and beginning to hear the cues of "I am really tired all the time.", "I don't feel like running at all."  "My runs aren't going well."  "I am sore more often."  "My legs just don't have the energy they had before."  And so much more.  Share your tips for preventing overtraining and future injury.  Talk about the cues and signs.  Just post your name and the title/topic of your post in the first spot and the link to your post in the second spot.

Great Running Shirts: Bring 'Em On

Shirts with quips about running are a vital part of our sport.

Tee_shirts_2 And this week at the Lounge we’re having fun discussing favorite running shirts.  Running shirts can make us laugh, inspire us, and point out brilliant insights about running.

Running shirts—admiring the ones we see others wearing and dreaming of the next great quote to print on a shirt—is a natural past time for runners.

A well-stated quip on a running shirt can unite us, leave us nodding and feeling a bond with other runners.  There are lot of shirts I wouldn’t wear, but I’m always lurking to read the next great message on another runner’s back.  I’ve also been known to stop a stranger or e-mail a blogger to ask, “Where can I get that shirt?”

A few of my favorites:

Makes me feel like as a runner, I’m in good company...

'"And on the seventh day, God did an easy three."

Reminds me that a marathon is like planning a family reunion…

"18 weeks ago. . .this seemed like a good idea."

Who doesn’t enjoy a shirt that taunts non-runners.

Cross-country: No time outs, no half times, no substitutions. The only true sport.

Philosophical...

"It seems like when you are out running everyone else is in bed. But the one day you miss that run, the whole neighborhood is out for a jog."

Finally, it's long, but I've been encouraged to print the following description on a shirt:

. . . there we were putting lube on our bodies, throwing off our clothes . . .
. . . after we started, we grew hot, panting, our hearts pounding . . .

. . . we kept it up for hours, jostling and slipping around each other . . .
. . . our bodies glistening with sweat

. . . finally, drained of every ounce of energy, reaching the climactic moment . . .
. . . we stopped, shuddered with amazement, releasing gasping breaths . .

. . . all in full view of complete strangers.

So what did you do this weekend?

the Chicago Marathon

There is no shortage of running shirts and the great quotes we wear.  So bring on your favs and share them tomorrow at the Lounge on Take It And Run Thursday.

(After post note from Amy:  Tom, I couldn't resist!  I remember this story fondly.  Especially watching our coworkers blush.   So....it is now a T-shirt has been created to forever capture the memory.)

Why I run...in 13 words

I_am_a_runner_shirt This week for Take It And Run Thursday, we invite everyone to complete the statement about why you are a runner…in 13 words or less.

It can be a variation on how you define yourself as a runner, when you recognized you became a runner or what it took to become a runner.

The challenge—besides saying it in 13 words—is to express yourself without having to explain it further.  Let your statement speak for itself.  There are no wrong answers.

So here goes:

I’m healthiest, happiest, strongest, and enjoy the most meaningful life when I run.

We also hope you have fun and enjoy others’ views.

Improve your speed with Strides

Let’s face it, some of the attraction of 5k and 10k races is the shorter distance.  Who doesn’t love to finish a race in a fraction of the time it takes to run a marathon?

The other attraction is, well, running faster! That includes running faster in training as well as the race.  One of my favorite techniques for improving speed is using “strides.”

Kids_runn Strides aren't much different than our grade school playground days, when we ran fast, but only for a short distance.  Also known as striders or pickups, strides are simply accelerating for a short distance, holding the pace, and then slowing down.   An example: accelerate for 30 yards, hold it for 40 yards, then decelerate for 30 yards.

My first few strides sometimes feel sluggish and lumbering, but after two or three, the legs get in sync and my knees come up higher and my legs extend further in a smoother, more powerful stride.

The key to running strides is taking all the time you care to recover between. Another key is getting warmed up first, usually after a mile or more of easy running.  Running 4-6 strides before a speed workout gets me fully loose and ready to run faster.  Strides also can be the focus of a light speed workout on a light day.  Warm up, run 8-10 strides, cool down.

Stilts_2 Finally, at the end of a medium long run, running 5-6 strides refreshes my legs and sharpens my form, improving my speed and leaving me feel energized.  Strides are a great stress buster without the demand of a grueling speed workout.

Sure, strides are also a formal part of speed training.  The benefit is improving running form and opening up our leg turnover beyond the routine range of motion we typically use mile after mile.

I like to run strides on the straightaways of a track and then recover on the curves, but if I'm running in the neighborhood, I just stride from one end of a block to the other or from a fire hydrant to a stop sign.

Go ahead and mix up your runs.  Bust out a few stridesRun fast!  It feels Olympian!

We're looking forward to reading everyone's tips for 5k and 10k races for Take It and Run Thursday. Your tips can be anything from training, racing, what to do and what not to do.

Rethinking the 20 mile marathon training run

20_mile_mark At the heart of marathon training for the past several decades has been the 20-mile run. Regarded as the must-run distance before showing up on marathon day, completing the 20 miler has become the cardinal rule to “get in.”

I’ve experimented with lots of 20-mile combos in preparing for different marathons.   I’ve “got in” 1 x, and 2 x, and 3 x 20 miles under different training schedules.  For several years I dinked around obsessively with the 20-miler, believing it held the secret formula of marathon training.  I believed magically that if I uncovered the mysterious combination of 20 mile runs, at the right pace and spaced perfectly apart, then I’d have discovered gold.

I believed that “mastering” 20 miles, especially multiple times in training, was my Get-Out-Of-Hitting-The-Wall Card.   On one occasion, I was maniacal about “getting in” a 20 miler when it wasn’t going to be possible on a weekend.  Well, let’s just say I woke up early enough to run 20 miles, stretch, shower, dress, eat, and be in my downtown office by 8:00 a.m.  That’s a long run obsession I’m not proud of.

20_mile_4 Marathon training schedules published by Jack Daniel’s, known as “The World’s Greatest Running Coach,” call for a maximum long run of 2:45 minutes of running, regardless of whether you’re running to “complete” or “compete.”

Keith and Kevin Hanson, gurus of the Hanson-Brooks Distance Project, passionately rail against the 20 miler, calling it idol worship to a sacred cow for way too long with no relevant reason.  As coaches of elites—including ’08 Marathon Olympian Brian Sell—and ordinary runners, the longest run they allow is 16 miles.  It’s all explained in Marathoning the Hansons’ Way: Smashing the Myth of the Twenty Miler.

Why 20 miles?  An abundance of reasons.  Hal Higdon’s training programs, which successfully guide thousands of marathoners to the finish line, always include one or more 20 mile runs.  It’s a round number.  It’s not Mt. Everest, but it’s an impressive figure to casually throw around that you ran 20 miles on a morning before most folks have their Starbucks.  Also, running the 20 miler feels like it might be a predictor of success on race day, since after all, only 6.2 miles remain untested.

Three years ago I stopped drinking from the 20-mile Kool Aid.  In looking back at my best finish times as well as how I felt during the later miles, they all came with long runs of 17–18 milers.  Many years ago, I ran my marathon PR on a steady diet of medium-long runs ranging from 10–14 miles and only one 18-mile long run just to feel what it was like.

A 20 mile run is an accomplishment, and I’m not knocking it for others. I don't shrink from running a 20 miler because it's longer or harder,  I'd walk across hot coals to shave a few minutes off my finish time.  But I’ve marathoned best when I back down from 20 miles for my long runs, avoid the body breakdown it delivers, and instead focus on tempo, pace, and recovery runs.

Rethinking the 20 miler works for me.

"Marathon Mania" is the topic for tomorrow's Take It And Run Thursday.  Even if you're not a marathoner, you can contribute.  Ask your questions, share some second-hand advice.  For marathoners, we all need every shred of help we can find, so trot out your best marathon stuff.

Backwards Take It and Run Thursday.   Instead of posting wisdom, post a question you have about your running, training, racing, gear, hydration, etc that you need help answering.   Maybe you are looking for suggestions on the perfect hydration belt, a flat/fast fall marathon, a 10k training plan, or how to get rid of an ache/pain or injury - whatever it is, post it and tell others what you need help with.  And of course, next week - you can stop by and help others with their questions.

Running Insights in 13 words.

This week we're limiting our Take It And Run Thursday to "13 Words About Running."  It's challenging and fun.  I bent the rules a bit by creating several different 13-word bytes.

Life's rewards begin with stopping what we’re doing and taking time to run.

When I meet a wonderful person, chances are good they are a runner.

Running allows us to experience the full life of mind, body, and spirit.

Please join us tomorrow and on drop off a 13-word nugget of wisdom.

Take It and Run Thursday: Got Inspiration?

Take_it_and_run_thursday_2 Welcome to Take It and Run Thursday!

It's our way to bring together the knowledge of all of us ordinary runners.  It's the virtual equivalent to putting our virtual heads together.  Even though many of us aren't elite athletes, coaches or authors, it doesn't mean that we haven't earned a well deserved PhD in running.   Whether you are starting out, have 50 years of running under your belt or somewhere in between - all of us have lessons learned that make us wiser and better runners.

Today's theme is .... Got Inspiration?

Share what inspires you!  It could be a story, a quote, a running memory, a friend or your own ambition.   Whatever it is, hang it out on a shingle and pass it along to your running friends.

Just post your name and the title/topic of your post in the first spot and the link to your post in the second spot.     And then read and enjoy!

Next Week's Theme is ... In 13 words or less..   Share your best lesson you have learned about running.  And do it in 13 words or less.  Think of it as 13 word Thursday.   Just like every runner has a story, I know every runner has a lesson learned about running.  Some learned easier than others - but all helpful to share.

Look Back at Highlights of TIART: Training Plans

The guest for Open Mic Friday couldn't join us today, but the feature will return next week.

Yesterday’s Take It and run Thursday was rich with advice on training plans.  Thank you to everyone who participated on the topic and also to those who read and connected with others.

The posts were filled with some great wisdom, including some good commentary on the FIRST program.  I just wanted to point out some highlights in the event you didn’t read them all yet.

  • There’s still more work as a group of blogging runners that we can do to help Laura to write her training plan
  • SLB does a great job of discussing his training mistakes
  • Doug has lived on the edge and he’s building his plans around not overdoing it.
  • Coffee Betsy might have nailed one of the greatest lessons to be learned—that achieving the purpose of the run—recovery, long, speed, etc. is the key to optimizing the training plan.
  • You might stop by and wish luck to Shelah and Steve (a very fast runner) who are counting down to their marathons.

Finally, please know that there are some wonderful bloggers for whom we can't leave a comment without joining your social network.  Everyone is entitled to their choice of blog tools, and some highly interesting and insightful bloggers probably have no idea how much we enjoy your posts and want to leave comments.  We still have the option to join your network some day, but until we do, we get blocked and can't leave our appreciation and encouragement for you.  Just know we read and admire you too.

Today's theme is .... Training Plans.

This is a broad one and there is a lot of good information to share.   Do you have a favorite training plan that works consistently for you?  Do you use a tool to map and share your favorite routes?  Do you have a tool or log that you use to plan and track your results?   Share it all.  This is the time of year when we are all fishing for the perfect plan to help you finish your race.

Next Week's Theme is ... Got Inspiration?   We are pretty excited to announce our monthly winner of our Extraordinary Runner Award next Wednesday.   Reading all the great stories from the Loungers about why they run and what they have accomplished have really inspired us.  We want to keep the momentum going by having you share what inspires you.  It could be a story, a quote, a running memory, a friend or your own ambition.   Whatever it is, hang it out on a shingle on Take It and Run Thursday next week and pass it along to your running friends.

Take It and Run Thursday: Hydration

Take_it_and_run_thursday_2 Welcome to Take It and Run Thursday!

It's our way to bring together the knowledge of all of us ordinary runners.  It's the virtual equivalent to putting our virtual heads together.  Even though many of us aren't elite athletes, coaches or authors, it doesn't mean that we haven't earned a well deserved PhD in running.   Whether you are starting out, have 50 years of running under your belt or somewhere in between - all of us have lessons learned that make us wiser and better runners.

Today's theme is .... Hydration.

Let's talk water, H2O, aqua, and the other lifelines of hydration.  How much is enough?  Tell us what you do in your training runs and during races.   How do you hydrate when you are not running? Are you a water purist or do you like to mix it up with the other varieties on the market? What are your drinking habits for getting enough liquids, especially as we move into the warm months?  (I will leave it to your imaginations on how to interpret that question. :})It's quick and easy!

Just post your name and the title/topic of your post in the first spot and the link to your post in the second spot.     And then read and enjoy!
