A Salute to Running Moms

Here is a rerun of our annual Salute to Running Moms.....

A salute to the running moms who make running a priority and have the discipline to plan and stick with their training even when real life doesn't cooperate.   And also for the moms who don't.  A salute to the running moms who opt to sleep in an extra 30 minutes after being up all night or skip their run to help with a last minute school project because they know right then something else is more important.Dscn2829

A salute to the running moms who have the strength to eat the right foods at the right times to make sure they have the fuel they need to power their running.  And also the moms who rely on a PB & J sandwich as a prerun staple and left over mac n cheese for a little pick me up.

A salute to the moms who look great in spandex and sport tops - without a coverup - because they are runners.  And also the moms who don't, but wear it anyway because running makes them feel good enough to wear running clothes in public.

A salute to the moms who dig down deep to run hard and competitively in their races and set the bar higher for all women.  And also the moms who run their own race and race to finish just to show their kids it isn't always about winning - it is about finishing what you started.

A salute to the running moms that squeeze in a short run here and a long run there between errands, practices, work and kid crisises and don't miss a beat.  And the moms who also squeeze them in and show up at work, at school, or at home red faced, sweaty, stinky but happy because they got their run in.

A salute to the moms who run so her favorite pair of $100+ designer heels Dscn2831 match the priceless look of great running legs.  And also the moms whose only pairs of $100+ shoes are her favorite running shoes.

A salute to all running moms who could just as easily stop running because it would make life a little easier, but don't, because they know it makes them a better person.  It keeps them healthy when their kids aren't.  It keeps them sane when life is crazy.  It keeps them out of their fat clothes.   And, it gives them personal challenges that are uniquely their own.

A salute to all running moms, regardless of age, speed, ability, or goals who are proud to tell their family and friends they are a runner.   We salute them because they are a role model for their daughters, sisters, and the next generation of running mothers.

For these running moms, we say thank you for being a runner.

Today is The Day - The Ultimate Runner is Alive!

Book cover Today is the day when The Ultimate Runner is on shelves and ready for runners to read and enjoy!

It's a special day for Tom and I, not because our names are on the front cover, but because over 50 stories, photos and expert tips - from ExtraOrdinary runners like you - are now packaged and can be shared.

We are so excited that these running authors have their stories in the hands of other runners.   Some of these authors you know from past stories in the Lounge and some are new - but all are incredible.

Here is the list of the contributors - stop by and congratulate them on sharing a piece of their running with others.  This is their day!

The Story Writers:

The Experts:

Hey...that person looks familiar...

....Reading through the paper when a picture of a couple runners caught my eye.

Then I realized it was Tom Tom and i and me!

Here is the link the article in the Des Moines Register about the Lounge and the book.

It's really cool to realize that a year ago the book was still a dream and now it is a reality.

A wise man once gave us some great advice about building a community.   Keep moving forward and don't miss a date.

It was advice that works.

Now that I think of it, that would be good advice for running too.

A Salute to Ultimate Runner Moms

With Mother's Day just 10 days away, it seems fitting to kick off our annual Salute to Running Moms (recite The ultimate runner mom award with us now...annual salute to proclaim).  Each year (look back at 2008 and 2009) we pause for the cause to celebrate all mom's out there who are starting to run, continue to run, return to running or run better while fulfilling their motherly duties.

This year we would like to honor moms in a couple of ways:

  • Collect stories of ExtraOrdinary running moms who deserve a shout out - we think they deserve some recognition and you deserve more running stories to read.  What makes a running mom an ExtraOrdinary Ultimate Runner Mom?  The fact that they run and they are a mom.  Both are hard.
  • Help those families and friends who are clueless when it comes to Mother's Day gifts.  Yeah sure, the day isn't about gifts.  But there is bound to be something, so we might as well give husbands and kids a hand and point them in the right direction.

If you know of a mom who deserves her story told and her running celebrated, drop by the Lounge (The Ultimate Runner section) and take a few minutes to pen her story.  Don't forget links to her blog or site so we know who she is!   Sometimes there is no greater present to a mom than recognition of all that she does!

But for those times when there SHOULD BE a greater present.....

Drop by the forum and leave your two cents on the Ultimate Runner gift for a mom.  You can be serious or have some fun with it!    Tell us what you think running moms really want or need for Mother's Day.

We will choose a winner for each category on Wednesday, May 5 and gift them with a copy of our new book, The Ultimate Runner.   So act fast!  The storyteller and ultimate running mom will both receive the book as will the person with the great running mom gift ideas and the significant mom in their life.

We are serious about our salute and would love it if you could spread the word - the more chatter about moms the better!

And the answer is......

Although I really enjoyed writing the options of where we might have been, alas (sigh) none of those could capture the real reason for our silence and time away from the Lounge.    I was especially hoping I was on the 6 month running tour of all the continents.  But it continues to be a dream versus a reality.

The real answer?

.... f) None of the above.

The only real force that could keep us away from our running family is our own families.  We have such passion to hear and share running stories and connecting runners it is as much a part of our life as our own "real lives" with our friends and family.   But even our passion for runners found a second place to the need to help our families through some challenging times.

Tom and I are both married, but to different people.  And we each have families.  And in both sets of families we experienced family members with significant health and personal issues which required us to focus our time and energies to helping them.   Over the last few years, there have been many challenging times, but we found a way to work through it and still find time to devout to runners.   But this fall and winter, we found that we couldn't juggle our schedules and the needs of our loved ones and the needs of the Lounge.

And while we were struggling with the decision to take a few months leave the Lounge, a good friend offered the simple advice of "There is a season for everything".  That great advice helped us realize that it was ok to step away for a while, focus on my families needs and then return to the Lounge.

I appreciate the emails, nudges and check in over the last few months as well as the notes of encouragement.  I have missed the connection to my virtual running friends and look forward to connecting all over again.

So we are on the path to returning to one of our favorite places in the world - the Lounge and virtual running world.  I wish I could report that everyone is back to normal, healthy and happy in both our worlds.  Not quite - but we have both settled into a new "normal" and continue to support our families however they need.

Tom and I weren't complete nonrunning zombie's in our time off.  As we get back in the swing of things, we are looking forward to connecting you to some of the running friends we met over the last few months.

Let us know what you have been up to the last few months and what is going on in the virtual running world.   And we will find a way to give you a cliff notes version of the last few months.

Oh where, oh where did Tom and Amy go....

.... oh where, oh where could they be?

We have been away for a while.  Too long by blog and community standards as well as our own.

So what could take us away from the running family we love so much?

Could it be:

a) That we were recruited by an elite running team and have been too busy training for world class events across the globe?

b) Too busy being cover models for all our favorite running magazines?  (It takes a lot of time to look that good in skimpy running outfits).

c) We have been on a long dreamed, intricately planned 6 month running vacation which has taken us to all 7 continents?

d)  You can't even remember who Tom and Amy are

e) All of the above

f)  None of the above.

Hum....

Marathon Fever: Catch It!

It’s a widespread condition transmitted by runners.

Swept up in the moment, we complete a race application months before the marathon race date.  Before we know it, we’re diagnosed with a chronic condition known as Marathon Fever.

Marathon fever logo If you have Marathon Fever, you’re not alone.  It has spread among the millions of marathoners who will be running the 200+ marathons this fall in the U.S. and Canada, and 100+ international marathons.

And if you have Marathon Fever, stop looking for a cure.  Instead, please join us in making the Marathon Fever Lounge Group the new Mayo Clinic for runners.

Marathon Fever is a place where everyone is welcome to discuss your marathon training dreams, plans and progress.

We also know the excitement alone of preparing for a marathon can’t carry us to the start line on marathon day.  We need connections with other runners—their stories of struggles and triumphs, questions, answers, doubt and confidence. So we also hope you’ll exchange advice, encouragement, and support for all things marathon-related.

So we’d like to invite everyone with Marathon Fever to join in on the running conversations as we wade through the steamy summer heat and humidity, long runs, and solitude of getting ready for our fall marathons.

The floor is open to everyone to join the discussion about all things marathon training, racing, and dreaming. To deal with our collective Marathon Fever, we'll throw out topics that we can all discuss. You'll also be invited to join us on some podcasts, contribute some marathon articles and tips, and join in some surprises along the way.

This week's topic is all about you and how you contracted Marathon Fever.  We want to know which marathon you are running this year and when.  But more importantly, what are you most looking forward to?  If this is your first marathon, what’s weighing heavily on your mind?  If you’re a veteran, how are you hoping this marathon goes differently than your past marathon experiences.  Everyone is welcome!

Let’s keep Marathon Fever contagious.  Pass the word that Marathon Fever is catching—that an awesome group of marathon runners is assembling here at the Lounge to add to everyone’s marathon enjoyment and success.

Hey Running Moms! Need your help and ideas!

One of the runners who stepped forward after our HELP WANTED! post was Christy.   She not only offered her help, but she also passed on a great suggestion - let's do more for running moms.

Tom and I have long recognized that running moms are a special group of runners and wanted to do more to support this group - but haven't had the time or ideas to move forward in a way that best leverages the resources in the Lounge as well as provides resources targeted to running moms.

Christy posted a great article on her blog asking for your help and I would like to echo and pass along her request:

I realized that running for Mom's is much more than just for exercise. Lots of Mom's start running after babies are born to lose the weight but discover a much better reward. Maybe you were a runner before you were a Mom or maybe not. Maybe you ran during pregnancy, or maybe you run with your kids now. Maybe you run to get a break from your kids or maybe you run to be a better mom. No matter how you got there - we want to hear from you!

Before we launch this great project - we want to know what you are looking for.

  • What interests you as a Mom runner?
  • What would you want to see?
  • Are there topics out there that you think are not addressed enough?
  • What do you think is missing?
  • Are looking for a great network to start running groups for moms or maybe you want to start a team??

So many great things can be done but we are hoping you can help figure out what to do first!

One of the first questions we need to answer - we need a name for our group! I would love to have a great catchy name that says WE ARE MOMS AND WE RUN. Ideally it is just a few words and is not too cheesy. What do you think? Surely there is a Mom out there much more creative than me who has some great name for a bunch of crazy women who parent and run! It would also be great to have our own logo or design that was easy to recognize!

Thanks for all your input and please pass along this message to any other Mom's out there that you think might have some thoughts, advice, ideas - just about anything will do. You can comment on this post or even better - send me (Christy) an email at

runmommy@rogers.com. I can't wait to get all your replies and watch for us on the Runners Lounge!

And to get us started on collecting resources and information, I have added a new category to our Know How section called Running Mom Resources.   Thanks to Lani for agreeing to republish her post from December as the inaugrual post.   All you great running, blogging moms - send me your posts for republishing!  Let's build resources for moms!

I have also added a new "Connect with Me" category that you can attach to your profile to show others you are interested in Running Mom information.
