Take It and Run Thursday: You Are A Runner
Welcome to Take It and Run Thursday!
It's our way to bring together the knowledge of all of us ordinary runners. It's the virtual equivalent to putting our virtual heads together. Even though many of us aren't elite athletes, coaches or authors, it doesn't mean that we haven't earned a well deserved PhD in running. Whether you are starting out, have 50 years of running under your belt or somewhere in between - all of us have lessons learned that make us wiser and better runners.
Today's theme is .... ... 13 words or less: "You are a runner...." Finish the thought in 13 words or less. When did you know you were a runner? What did it take, in your head, to label yourself or tell others that you were a runner? Was it a quick transition or did it take a long time? If you have hung around in the Lounge for a while, you know my biases about this topic - but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts of what makes someone a runner.
Just post your name and the title/topic of your post in the first spot and the link to your post in the second spot.
Next weeks theme is - "That is a great running Tshirt!". Do you have a great running Tshirt or have the perfect phrase for a Tshirt? Look through your closets, do some virtual window shopping on the intranet, or make up your own. Drop it off on Thursday!

You are a runner when you stop dieting, and plan your clean food around your next run.

You are a runner...
...when you choose the Saucony's over the Uggs.
...when you can't remember the last time you had a pinky toenail.
...if you've worn an Enell and shorts under a suit "just in case."
...if you ever took 15 minutes out of the workday to finish this sentence.

i do not visit the lounge as often as i should, and had no idea about the topic of your TIAR topic this week until it arrived in my in box - long after i had hit publish on a post i called: "are you a runner"? the serenditpitous timing of your posts with my thoughts (and/or my posts) always amazes me!
my thoughts were a bit different from the ones that people are submitting for this topic, mostly beacuse i no longer know if i am a runner. there was once a time where i knew that indeed, i was a runner. it was the day i ran my first marathon and recieved the mylar blanket at the end. (of course now, i see that i was a runner long before that blanket got wrapped around me - but then, that was the piece that made it real for me) it sounds crazy, but i had run a half marathon about 5 months prior and saw all the full finishers get that blanket wrapped around them upon finishing. even though i had just finished 13.1, i saw anyone walking around with the silver blanket as a real runner & i wanted one. so, to me - the day i got it solidified my "i am a runner" claim. a title i proudly claimed as my own for the following year as i trained for 2 more marathons.
training for those 2 more marathons took more out of me than i expected, and i have actually, happily taken quite a bit of time off from running - but when someone asked me the other day if i was a runner, i didn't know how to answer. so i answered with what i was currently spending most of my time doing. the question stumped me. i was once a runner. and i was confident in that knowledge. but once a runner, always a runner? are you still a runner if you only run every now and then? are you still a runner if you can count on one hand the number of times you have run in the past 3 months?
perhaps i would finish the 'you are a runner' sentence with: when you come to terms with the fact that you need a break from the thing you once thought you couldn't live without and when you know that running will be there for you whenever you are ready to go back to it.

Great topic--one that everyone can participate in. I think I kind of went in a different direction with it at first, but both paths I took turned out to be interesting. :)
